Australia wins the first Cricket Test against South Africa.

 

 

WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHTLIGHTS - December 8-9

HORSE RACING:
OLD COMRADE won his second Group 1 victory in two weeks with an impressive win in the $300,000 Fruit 'N' Veg Stakes (1800m) at Ascot on Saturday. OLD COMRADE cruised to the line 1-3/4 lenghts clear of Miss Precisely with 15-1 chance Shot of Thunder running home strongly to be just a neck away third.

HARNESS RACING:
KYM'S GIRL won the Treuer Memorial on Saturday night at Bankstown.
Holmes DG won the start and kept the lead into the back straight the final time. But just when it looked as if he would hold on, Colin de Filippi steered Kym's Girl along the fence to grab victory by a head from Holmes DG with Yulestar a close third a neck away.

GREYHOUNDS:
NO INTENT won The Top Gun at the Meadows on Saturday night with TOLL SECURITY second and CARLISLE JACK running third.

 

WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHTLIGHTS - December 2

HORSE RACING:
SMOOTH SATIN won the $400,000 Miracle Mile at Harold Park beating the odds-on favourite COURAGE UNDER FIRE on the line.
Steve Turnbull drove SMOOTH SATIN to victory in the photo finish with Interdominion champion YULESTAR a neck third.

They say weight will stop a train. It did stop Hong Kong bound Show a Heart and Shogun Lodge on Saturday. Show a Heart was narrowly defeated by long shot Brodance at Caulfield, even surprising his trainer. Shogun Lodge was defeated more by luck than weight when unable to get a run, finishing seventh.

TENNIS:
DAVIS CUP FINAL
Sun 2 December
France wins the DAVIS CUP(3-2) after NICOLAS ESCUDE defeated Wayne Arthurs 3 sets to 1. Lleyton Hewitt earlier defeated SEBASTIAN GROSJEAN in straight sets to tie the series at 2-2.
Sat 1 December
France now lead the Final (2-1) after Cedric Pioline and Fabrice Santoro defeated Australia's Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Cash in the doubles match.
Fri. 30 November
Australia's LLEYTON HEWITT was beaten in the opening singles match by France's NICOLAS ESCUDE 4-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4.
PAT RAFTER evened the Final (1-1) by defeating SEBASTIAN GROSJEAN in three sets 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

BOXING:
World Title Fight - Sven Ottke defeated Anthony Mundine with a knockout in the tenth round. Mundine knocked out cold on the canvas for a few minutes.

CRICKET:
The 3rd Test between Australia and New Zealand is looking like Australia could at best get a draw after New Zealand scored 9/534 in the first innings and lead by 183 runs. Australia were all out for 351 with Shane Warne scoring 99 runs, before being caught off a Vettori ball, ending the Innings and the 3rd days play.

 

WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHTLIGHTS - November 23-25

HORSE RACING:
Cox Plate winner NORTHERLY was defeated in the Gr.1 Railway Stakes by Perth horse OLD COMRADE, last year's runner-up. Northerly finished 11th in the field carrying a 61.5kg weight handicap.
GILLESPIE was impressive in winning the 3200m QUEEN's CUP.
FIELDS OF OMAGH ran home to win the Gr.3 ECLIPSE STAKES at Sandown.

3 year old JUNGLE ROCKET won the $A7.77 million 2400M JAPAN CUP narrowly beating last year's winner T.M. OPERA.

GOLF:
Stuart Appleby become the Australian Open new champion today winning the title at The Grand.

SOCCER:
The Socceroos'
four year dream of qualifying for the World Cup was shattered in Montevideo after Uruguay scored a 3-0 victory in the second leg.

RUGBY:
The Wallabies
defeated Wales 21-13 in Cardiff, having lost the two previous games.

CRICKET:
The 2nd Test between Australia and New Zealand resulted in a draw due to continual rain interruptions in Hobart. The 3rd Test commences in Perth on Friday, 30 November.

 

WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHTLIGHTS - November 16-18

HORSE RACING:
Damian Oliver capped off a sensational spring carnival with 5 wins at Sandown on Saturday. Oliver rode SKY HEIGHTS to victory in the SANDOWN CLASSIC and the Danehill filly MOON DRAGON in the SANDOWN GUINEAS. MOON DRAGON will pose a serious threat to Oaks Winner MAGICAL MISS in the Autumn Carnival.

TENNIS:
Newly crowned world No. 1 LLEYTON HEWITT remained undefeated in the Master's Cup and beat SEBASTIAN GROSJEAN in the final 6-3 6-3 6-4.

Rugby Union:
The Australian Wallabies were once again defeated. This time beaten by France 14-13. This is the first time in 20 years the Australians have lost back to back Tests.

Rugby League:
The Kangaroos have won the second game in the Ashes series against England 40-12. This means the third test will decide the winner.

Golf:
Robert Allenby won the Australian PGA for the second year in a row. The last person to win two years in a row was Greg Norman in 1984-85. Allenby won with 15 under in a battle to the final hole with Geoff Ogilvy on 14 under.

 

WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHTLIGHTS - November 8-12

HORSE RACING:
Thursday: A record 100,000 plus crowd see Magical Miss win the VRC Oaks and become Bart Cummings 8th VRC Oaks winner and suprisingly Danehill's 1st.
Saturday: Desert Eagle beats Emission in the G1 Emirates Stakes. Godolphin finally get a winner at the Melbourne Cup Carnival when Hatha Anna wins the G2 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The Woodlands Stud Syndicate trifectered the Village Roadshow Welter with Burleigh (1st), Adolescence (2nd) and Comforts (3rd).

Rugby Union:
The Champion are defeated by England.

They will next face an in form France, fresh from a win over South Africa.

Rugby League:
The Australians on again off again Test Tour began in an off mode when they were defeated by England in the First Test.

Soccer:
The so called Soccer friendly between Australia and France was anything but friendly. This was as close as an Australian team could get to a win with a 1-1 draw. A very good result against the World Champion French team in the lead up to the Socceroos World Cup Qualifying matches

Cricket:
The 1st test between AUS & NZ went from a rain interrupted no show to an almost win by New Zealand as the Final Day ended up a virtual one day game. The game ended in a draw, breaking Australia's run of winning 12 test matches at home in a row. It also broke New Zealands 15 year 'Hoodoo' of Test Match defeats at the Gabba.

 

WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHTLIGHTS - October 19 - 21

HORSE RACING:
ETHEREAL, ridden by Scott Seamer, survived a protest from Damian Oliver on Sky Heights, to win the Group One Caulfield Cup. Trained by Sheila Laxon, Ethereal will not run in the Melbourne Cup and may race in Hong Kong International Vase.

BOXING:
ANTHONY MUNDINE
says he will knock out world champion Sven Ottke. He guaranteed himself a December 1 world title fight after stopping Guy Waters in two rounds on Saturday night at the Whitlam Centre in Liverpool.

500cc MOTOR RACING:
Having secured the world championship last weekend at Phillip Island, VALENTINO ROSSI has done it again and won his 10th race of the year in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Loris Capirossi came in second with Australian Garry McCoy earned a podium position with 3rd.

 


WEEKEND WRAP - SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS OCTOBER 12-14

HORSE RACING:
LONHRO WINS THE CAULFIELD GUINEAS TO BECOME THE FIRST OCTAGONAL PROGENY TO WIN A GROUP ONE
Octagonal colt LONHRO won the Group 1 2001 CAULFIELD GUINEAS by one and a quarter lengths with an incredible last to first finish, running the last 400 metres in 22.46 seconds.
Northerly won the Group 1 2000m Yalumba Stakes.
Show a heart won the Group 1 1600m Toorak Handicap.
Mistegic won the Group 2 1000m Schillaci Stakes and Freemason won the Group 2 2400m Winning Edge Stakes.

MOTOR RACING: 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island
Valentino Rossi won the 500CC Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship by winning the Qantas Australian 500CC Motorcycle Grand prix at Phillip Island. Rossi has now won all 3 Motorcycle Grand Prix classes. Winning the 125cc crown in 1997, the 250cc in 1999 and now the 500cc in 2001.the 2001 Championship by 67 points. Max Biaggi finished in second place by 0.013 seconds in an incredible finish to one of the most exciting races of the season. Biaggi retains second position in the Championship.

MOTOR RACING: Formula 1 Grand Prix Suzuka, Japan
Michael Schumacher wins the Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix, at Suzuka Japan on Sunday 14 October for his ninth win this season.
