OCTAGONAL FILLY TOPS DEAUVILLE SUNDAY Deauville, France,
August 23 - Octagonal has taken a starring role at the
Deauville Yearling Sale in France with a session-topping FF5
million ($A1,305,600) filly secured by Sheikh Maktoum Al Maktoum’s
Gainsborough Stud management. The Octagonal-Manureva filly
is a half-sister to Group One Atto Mile winner Riviera from
the family of Group One winners Maximova, Septieme Ciel, Macoumba
and Nonalco and she was offered by Haras d”Etreham. She will
be prepared by English trainer Mick Channon, who handled Group
One winner Tobougg. Agence Francaise Australian representative
Frank Pollio said the filly was a stand-out in the prestigious
catalogue of 586 yearlings. “She was a really lovely filly,
tall, with a great shoulder and strong hindquarters and she
walked exceptionally well,” said Pollio, who has just returned
from France. Australian Anton Koolman was underbidder on the
filly.
Octagonal averaged $A235,008 and grossed $A1,880,064 from
the eight to go under the hammer. Three others were bought
back at a total of $A182784 while a futher two horses were
absent from the sale. “It is very, very pleasing - she was
a lovely filly and she has gone to a great home,” said Woodlands
Stud Bloodstock Manager Trevor Lobb today. “Octagonal is having
a terrific sale and his average is far exceeding last year’s
so his first crop must really be showing something,” he said.
“Of course, he’s had a winner in France and we couldn’t have
been happier with our weekend results with Lonhro (Octagonal
- Shadea) winning the G2 Warwick Stakes, Hosannah (Octagonal
- Genuflect) finishing runner-up to Ha Ha in the G2 Silver
Shadow and Demanding (Octagonal - Winged Prayer) winning at
Belmont Park in Perth.”
Octagonal’s first northern hemisphere crop averaged FF363,750
($A95,006) for eight sold at the 2000 Deauville Sale. His
second southern hemisphere crop of yearlings averaged $A152,460
for 45 sold with a top price of $A650,000 for a colt from
Bold Promise (Luskin Star) knocked down to Asian Bloodstock
(Jpn) as agent at the Inglis Easter sale this year.

HOSANNAH AND LONHRO HERALD NEW SEASON FOR OCTAGONAL
Sydney, August 17 – Classy filly Hosannah will target the
four-leg Princess Series culminating in the Group One Flight
Stakes (1600m), starting with the Group Two Silver Shadow
Stakes (1200m0 at Warwick Farm tomorrow. “She has trialled
very nicely and I am happy with her progress,” said trainer
John Hawkes. “I think a mile will be about her limit but you
never really know until you try and at this stage the Princess
Series is her goal and she will most probably continue in
Melbourne later in spring.” Hosannah scored an impressive
win in the Group Two Magic Night Stakes (1200m) last campaign
and she was sent to the paddock for a well-deserved break
after her unlucky fourth to Ha Ha in the Golden Slipper. On
that occasion Hosannah settled last and flashed home late
to finish only two lengths from the winner in a fashion that
left few in doubt that Group One victory is within her sights.
She was given a solid hit-out when fourth to Oomph over 900m
at Rosehill on August 7. Meanwhile, Lonhro will take on seven
individual Group One winners in the Warwick Stakes (1300m)
in a bid to avenge his last start Missile Stakes defeat when
blocked for a run. “The light weight and the extra distance
helps, so he will be competitive,” said Hawkes of the colt
who will carry just 49.5kg with Daryl McLellan aboard.
